Halloween Treat Tubes

Made these cute gift boxes for the kids yesterday.

I cut a paper towel tube in half, printed out a picture, glued it onto the tube and folded in the ends.

HUGE NOTE: I've seen people do this with toilet paper tubes and I'm kind of grossed out a bit by that. Especially since I've also seen where they drop in loose candy. Have we not all seen Mythbusters and know how many germs fly around when we flush? Maybe I'm overreacting. It's just a little too close to the toilet for me. Do what makes you comfortable.

I stuffed a pair of skeleton gloves in the one for Vance, but while doing so I noticed that they are adult size. Funny, I unknowingly did the same thing with the new socks that I bought him on Tuesday. I'm enjoying the new socks (they have arch support!) and it looks like I'll be rocking new spooky gloves too.

For Vaughn's I have a Halloween headband. Hmmm....Not going to work either. I'll stick one end of the headband in. Quoting Tim Gunn, "We'll make it work". (Tim Gunn is in no relation to Tommy Gunn, produce-man extraordinaire. Tommy Gunn's response to a lady who asked what to do with okra: "Lady, you can do whatever the hell you want with that okra after you buy it." I love that story.)

Happy Make it Work Friday to you!

Spooky Lunch #2

Here's my version of a spooky lunch. FYI: Cutting freehand circles out of bread is a bit tricky, especially when they're close together.

Wanna know the school's version of a spooky lunch? Chicken Fried Steak, Tuna Salad Sandwich, or a Bologna & Cheese Sandwich. Those are 3 of the 4 selections today. I shiver when I think about it.

Wednesday, October 27, 2010

Apparently, I feel that it's necessary to try and make Vance's lunch as spooky as possible.

$10 bucks that he won't even say anything about this when he gets home from school today.

...............

Vaughn and I are on Day 3 of Potty Training.

For her, not me.

She does return the favor of cheering for me when I go, so that's a nice addition to my day.

Our Potty Currency goes like this: 2 M & M's for number 1 and 5 M & M's for number 2. I printed out a princess potty chart and bought stickers, but she could care less about those. Actually, she gets the biggest kick out of flushing. She's done pretty well over the past two days, so hopefully today goes even better.

Thinking that I've bought my last box of diapers ever (EVER!) is pretty exciting and worth celebrating. But we'll hold off on that until it's a done deal.

...............

Big night for us, pizza, Survivor, and pumpkin carving. We carved pumpkins last year while Vaughn napped, so she hasn't experienced pumpkin guts yet. We toasted the seeds but no one really ate them.

Do you toast seeds? If so, what's your recipe?

Have a good day! Feels like fall is finally here! Is it safe to turn the AC off?

Down with Paper

Here at headquarters, we're trying to do our part for the earth and our budget. (Ha! Budget!)

How many paper towels do you use a day? We use a lot and in order to change that we're trying something new. We bought a big pack of micro-fiber cloths from Home Depot. 24 of them for $10, something like that. Just throw them in the wash when they're dirty. (Careful, no fabric softener though.)

I figured having a lot of them would help. Having a wet cloth or even a sponge next to the sink grosses me out, so there's always a new towel to grab. So far it's been working pretty well. One thing that I don't like about the micro-fiber cloths is how they feel. Is it because my skin is really dry or do they "stick" to everyones hands?

There you go, my tip for the day.

What the H with this wind? Ponytails and bobby pins ladies! Have a good one!

Jr's Birthday & Weekend Update

  • My little brother turned 30. We came. We partied. We got him a gigantic Big Green Egg that weighs 800 pounds with no real plan on how to get it to his house. Happy Birthday Jeffrey! Hope you got your Egg home! It was a good Friday night.
  • Saturday morning we went to Jack-a-roo's last soccer game. They won, I think Jack scored all 4 goals. Way to go Jack!
  • We then stopped by Gram's for a quick visit.
  • We rejoined my family for lunch. The kids watched Spiderman in the kid's room. Vaughn hasn't stopped talking about Spidey since.
  • Back home, we found the piece for our broken treadmill had been delivered. Justin fixed it and we're back up and running. Literally.
  • On Sunday we took 2 car loads of stuff to Goodwill. The extra elbow room feels great.
Big week of Halloween related stuff going on. Can't wait! Hope everyone had a great weekend!

The Toothbrush Situation

Justin is currently using a pink toothbrush.

(That's what was given to him at the dentist and since we follow the "You get what you get and you don't throw a fit" rule, he didn't say anything about it.)

I am currently using a blue toothbrush.

(I picked mine out at Target. It's a pastel blue and supposed to be extra gentle on your toofers.)

This simple twist has really been throwing our universe off. We keep reaching for each others toothbrushes.

(With fists in air)

Damn you gender assigned colors!

Good Day to you all.

Pumpkin Farm 2010

We went to the pumpkin farm yesterday. So did a thousand other people. It was busy.

Fun fact: We were at this same pumpkin farm on the same day last year. You can read about it here and compare Vaughn's pigtails to see how much they've grown. Last year it was freezing cold, muddy, and windy. This year was dry, dusty, and hot!

Hayride!

Whose hillbilly kids are those? Yikes!

(Vaughn is into belly buttons now. This wasn't the first time of the day that hers made an appearance.)

Cross pumpkin farm off our list! Been there, done that!

Happy Monday! Be bold today!

Avatar

Vaughn has a new thing. She'll do the above stance and say in a low voice, "avatar" and stomp her feet.

I'm as clueless as you are. No idea where this came from. We've never seen the movie. We've never talked about it.

Aren't kids the weirdest things?

Enjoy your Friday!

Turkeys

The red-hatted turkey tries to communicate with the turkey that's in the chokey, while the other two turkeys hang back at a comfortable distance.

This was last Sunday at a small pumpkin farm that's less than a minute down the road from us. It was so hot outside and it seemed off that we were amongst pumpkins in almost 90 degree heat. We left with only 2 small pumpkins. We're keeping it real and not buying our big pumpkins until the temps drop.

Random Rant

I like to check out the reviews when I look at online recipes. It annoys the hell out of me when a reviewer gives a recipe 5 stars (or high marks) but then lists all the changes that they did to it.

Give it a lower score, then list what you did differently that made it so successful.

GD, people.

Vaughnie & Clyde: Updates

Family picture!

How are those kids? I'll tell you!

Vance:

Vance's motion sickness is back. (I don't understand how it comes and goes, but it does.) I've made an improvement to the puke bucket: placing a plastic bag inside of it and screwing on the lid. That way I just take the bag out and toss it. Disgusting yes, but I'll take contained puke over un-contained puke any day.

He's still filling every empty second with words. Talks nonstop that Vance. In the car the other morning he had gotten sick and was actually quiet for a minute straight afterwards then busted out with, "Mom, did you know that brown bears eat more meat than grizzly bears." Or it might have been the other way around but I just started laughing. His mind must be constantly going.

He's going through another growth spurt because lately he's eating a ton. And yesterday night his soccer classes started again. It's an instructional league, so no games, but it was the first class that he's EVER done without any hesitation leaving our side for. Major advancements on his part. We were proud of him.

Today marks his last vacation day and he'll be back to school on Monday. I've enjoyed the last three weeks with him home all day with me.

Vaughn:

Vaughn is into princesses, mermaids, and butterflies more than ever. While we were away last weekend she got to play with the older girls toys and loved every magical princessy moment of it. She loves wearing PJ's now and often asks randomly during the day if we can put them on. After getting her dressed she looks down at herself, feels her clothes, smiles, and says, "I beautiful!" As much as she does like the girlie girl stuff, she's also into "boy" stuff. Cars, trains, legos, digging in the dirt, that kind of stuff. It's just easier to say that Vaughn is into everything these days.

She's starting to talk more during class, so her teacher tells me. I guess during story time she interrupted to tell the class about her beautiful, pink, princessy PJ's.

Last night at Vance's soccer practice she repeatedly tried to sneak on the field. She also laughed at a little boy who was crying. (I don't know where that came from.) I'll also tell you that she has 4 or 5 splinters in her arm/hand that she won't let us touch. My big little lovely lady friend is one of a kind.

If you'd ask Vaughn about being two years old, she'd tell you that it is a struggle and her parents would agree. Surviving everyday is a small victory.

Vance & Vaughn:

Together they've been starting to bother each other and in return, it's bothering us. For the most part they're good together and we consider ourselves lucky. You can tell when they've been together too much and need some alone time. Vance is a good big brother and always looks after Vaughn in new settings, like a new playground or something like that. Vaughn often takes the role as "little sister" and lets Vance show her the way. Other times it's the exact opposite and we have to remind Vance to not be bullied by his 2 year old sister.

Lately their favorite thing to do is color. All about coloring. It's borderline an addiction. I can't keep enough coloring books and drawing paper in the house and I had to go buy more Twistable crayons last week. (Vaughn still just peels the paper off the regular crayons and makes huge messes with markers.)

They're each others best friends and I love seeing their bond grow.

Now, it's breakfast time. I never meant for this to be this long. Enjoy your day! And weekend! I'm making taco soup on Sunday!

Getting Buggy with it

The past two times that I've bought Earthbound Farms romaine hearts I've found bugs.

And a lot of them.

Too many for me to feel comfortable eating the lettuce even after washing.

I do know that this lettuce does not come pre washed. I expect to find dirt. I'm okay with that.

I also want you to know that I wash the sink thoroughly before filling it with water and tossing the lettuce in.

Lastly, I'd like you to know that washing and drying lettuce is a chore that I despise. This doesn't really have anything to do with the story, just thought I'd add that in.

Am I silly for throwing the lettuce out? Where does your comfort level fall when it comes to this stuff? Could you eat Buggy Lettuce?

Mad Town

I mentioned yesterday that our wheels fell off in Madison over the weekend. I meant it.

Here's an antique store that we always pass along the way. The man with the blue shorts has been waiting for a drink in his hand for the past 5 years.

At this point, Vance had asked, "Are we there yet?" 247 times.

On our first night, as I Tweeted, our hotel's fire alarms went off around 12:30 in the morning and we had to evacuate. We walked down 3 flights of steps, around 2 sides of the building, and into the hotel lobby where we were cleared to go back in after 5 or so minutes. Elevators weren't working, so back up 3 flights of stairs with my 34 lb. little lady friend.

The next morning we had pictures taken at the park below. It was a beautiful morning.

We then ran the kids to exhaustion nearly every night. It was fun, but the kids were toast.

On Sunday we went to a parade in our old hometown. Vaughn was A Mess. We debated if we should just pack up and head out of town then. We didn't. It may have been a mistake.

After a rather interesting lunch we drove and drove and drove to let the kids take a nap in the car. Wisconsin is beautiful in the fall. Below is somewhere around New Glarus.

The next morning we were checked-out and on the road by 7:15. Everyone was more than ready to get back home. One room living is always hard when little ones are involved. We did have a good time though. Sadly enough, we didn't make it back with any cheese or Spotted Cow.

Unloading the car, our 1 year old Samsonite suitcase lost a wheel. The whole thing just broke off. Guess it had enough of vacation too.

We went to Madison for a long weekend and our wheels fell off.

That's all I have time for now, but I'll be back later.

Enjoy this weather!
