Tea Cup Bird Feeder

My daughter came to me on Saturday morning with a picture of a bird feeder that she wanted to make, but unfortunately I didn't have all the specific materials, so this is what we came up with instead. I'm happy to finally have put these tea cups to good use since I've had them since last spring! The finished product is adorable and took less than 5 minutes to make, so two thumbs up!  Here we go!

You'll need these plastic tea cups from Target, which are sold in the party aisle.

Get your hot glue gun warmed up and align the cup and saucer.

Use a quarter-sized blob of glue and hold them together until they set.

When the glue is completely cool, tie a ribbon to the handle, hang on the tree, and fill with bird seed.

That's it! They look so cute hanging in the tree and are a great way to welcome spring!

  1. visiting from motivate me monday...what a great idea! I am in the high desert..plastic is a no-no here..the sun literally eats it up! But I can do the same with a china tea cup! I'll check the thrift store next time and pick up a few. This would be great for my little birds that get kicked away from the larger feeder I have in my back yard!!! Thanks for the idea!

    1. Hi Cheri! Yes, a real tea cup would be perfect! If it's really heavy you might want to skip the hot glue and go straight for the E9000 permanent glue to make sure it really holds. Good luck and thanks for stopping by!

  2. Hi...yes, very cute! I'm wondering how they worked out practically? Did breezes swing them causing too much bird seed to fall off? My other thought was if the smell of the glue put birds off? I'm not very (read: barely) crafty but this looked like a project I could accomplish, so I wanted to know in advance if these feeders worked out well. Thank you, Charisa...how cool of you to post these projects!

    1. Hi Delphi!

I'd say these are perfect for a child's craft and are more on the novelty side. Kind of an instant gratification that kid's love and they do look adorably whimsical hanging in the tree. I'd follow Cheri's idea above and use a real tea cup and saucer (with a stronger bonding glue) if you'd like to try it out. I don't think birds would be scared off by the smell of the glue, but I can't say for sure. Placement is key on the tree, so that the cup doesn't tip and spill and since the seed is open to the elements, it might blow out, get wet from rain, etc. Again, it might be more of a novelty but they are sure cute. Maybe I'll pick up a cheap tea cup and saucer and try one out for myself. I'll let you know for sure if I do!
